Peritoneal metastases are common in patients with advanced gastric cancer and are generally associated with a less favorable prognosis. β-Elemene is a natural compound that can be isolated from wenyujin turmeric and is widely used in China to treat a variety of cancers. In our study, we found that β-elemene significantly inhibits the migration and invasiveness of gastric cells in vitro and inhibits the ability of gastric cancer cells to fade peritoneally and form metastases in vivo. Mechanically, we were able to demonstrate that the anti-metastatic effects of β-elemene were exerted by decreasing the expression of claudine-1. In addition, the elements of β have been found to inhibit the metastatic capacity of cells by decreasing FAK phosphorylation which regulates claudine-1. However, the anti-metastatic effects of β-elemene in gastric cancer are still unknown.
